We speak to Deliciously Stella…

EEEK, today’s guest is someone whom always has us in stitches, doesn’t take herself too seriously + totally embraces her ability to create a satire of the entire health industry. Aside from her Deliciously Stella instagram and podcast, you may be delighted to know that Bella is also a stand up comedian and will even be performing at this year’s Edinburgh fringe festival. We will so be there.

Hi Bella, thanks for joining us today. Huge fans is a total understatement. Deliciously Stella always has us howling. What was your initial motivation for starting your page?

I basically needed to drum up some interest in my first hour of stand up comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe last year. I was overwhelmed by how many pictures of avocados and beach yoga I saw, and I thought – you know what? I could definitely parody this.

Did you ever see this turning into such a success?

When I started the account, what I considered as success was it maybe being shared on a couple of my friends’ facebook pages. I never saw this level of attention happening. It has eclipsed everthing I’ve ever done pretty much.

Inevitably (we hope) the clean eating fad will soon dissipate, if so, where do you see the future heading for deliciouslystella?

I feel like as long as clean eating is a fad, deliciously stella will continue to get it wrong. I’m aware she has a shelf life, Maybe one day she’ll die in a freak chip fat fryer incident, but for the moment she’s definitely here to stay.

What’s the craziest thing that you’ve done for a picture?

I’m not sure. I mean I have strapped ice lollies to my front which was absolutely freezing. It was probably when I asked my mum to take a picture of me eating in the bath. She had to arrange the bubbles which was an awkward encounter, especially with a parent.

We’re currently hooked on your podcast, I think you’re even funnier in ‘real life’…can we ever expect to see you on the telly?

Thanks so much, that’s very kind of you. I have got some TV plans in the future which I’m very excited about, although I’m not allowed to talk about them yet! I’m also doing a live show at the moment as the character Deliciously Stella so who knows where that will go. I urge you to please come and see me in the Pleasance at the Edinburgh festival. I’m performing my show every night for a whole month and I need as many friendly faces in the crowd as possible!

Many may be shocked to hear that you’re Leiths trained, which must mean you’re a dab hand in the kitchen. When you’re not eating pasta hoops on toast, what is your favourite thing to cook?

When I’m not melting cheese on things, I eat a pretty normal diet. I love Asian food and I make a mean slow roast lamb. Leiths was offered at my school so I’m lucky to be able to boil an egg. Before I started I was completely useless.

Aside from blogging, what are your favourite hobbies?

I work pretty hard so I would say probably drinking and lying down. Also stand up comedy. Lots and lots of stand up comedy.

• • • •

Have you ever met someone in person that you’ve made fun of on instagram? Was it awkward?

I have! I’ve met loads of them and they are so nice. I love that they’re so willing to laugh at themselves. There’s nothing wrong with a difference of opinion, as long as nobody takes themselves too seriously.

Where do you call home?

I live in Brixton now but home for me will always be in Scotland. My mother has spoiled me horribly so I love going home. She’s the best cook I’ve ever met so I usually come home considerably plumper

Do you ever get embarrassed?

All the time! The beauty of Deliciously Stella is that I’m in complete control of how revolting I look. Whenever something embarrassing happens by accident I’m straight into the pit of shame.

Tell us a secret

I secretly really like courgettes.

• • • •

We also love to play with our food, and would rather use superfood powder to create green monsters than eat it. Do you actually eat your creations?

I’ve seen these and I think they are genuinely amazing. My dad has a mortal fear of hamsters. True story. I eat everything on my page. Once I’ve photographed it, it all goes in a giant Tupperware for my housemates and I. I can’t say they’re thrilled about a summer filled with pic n mix.

You’ve left us on a clif edge with your podcasts. Please tell us who the ‘mildly famous’ person was? (if you listen to Bella’s podcast you’ll know what we’re talking about)

Ha ha! I couldn’t possibly. Although his surname rhymes with roule.

We’re looking for boyfriends too and I’m pretty sure that the good ones are extinct. Who would be your dream catch?

Anyone who likes a woman who loves to show off. That’s the only person who could cope.

• • • •

Do you like to travel? If so, where’s your favourite destination?

My cousin lives in Kenya so any chance to go out and see her is always amazing. When I was growing up I wanted to be a zookeeper and then a taxidermist so animals have always been my thing.

One lesson that you wish you’d known before getting into the world of social media.

Don’t delete messages from vegan trolls. They’ll only troll you harder.

HA! Thanks for joining us Bella, you’re totally awesome and we hope to meet you this year. In the meantime we’ll just listen to your podcast on repeat and continue to howl every time you post an insta pic. Oh, and we will put the fringe fest in our diaries too!
