How to travel on a budget

You’ve probably noticed by now that we travel a lot. It’s a challenge of mine to visit 21 countries this year as I’ve just recently turned 21. Big ask, I know, but with my savvy travelling tips I think I can make it happen. Here’s how we manage to spend the majority of my time on the other side of the world!

Be flexible on location

Now, I know you’re dying to go to Maldives, but so is the rest of the population. It’s no wonder that everyone’s dream destination comes with a 5-figure price tag. Travelling is so much fun, but it can be made even more exciting when your trip is spontaneous. If you’re heart isn’t set on where you want to go, then finding a budget holiday is easy. We rely on a few websites to do the dirty work for us…

Skyscanner is our saviour

If you’re new to skyscanner, then let me introduce you to our holiday wingman. Skyscanner searches the world wide web for the best deals on flights, lets you know the cheapest destinations available during the dates that you’ve selected, and even goes as far as showing you the best days of the week to leave.

If you like what you’re hearing, then we really recommend downloading the skyscanner app. We find it a lot easier to use than the website, and the deals are even better than lastminute.com. Remember our trip to Warsaw, Poland, a few weeks ago? Yeah, we have skyscanner to thank for that. £70 return flights, plus £6/night accommodation made the trip incredibly cheap.

If possible, travel during the week and avoid peak-times/school holidays.
Common sense, I know, but travelling on the weekends can often double the cost of your trip. If you’re not tied down by work, take the extra 10-15 minutes to compare the prices of different days in the week. We guarantee that you’ll thank us later.

Don’t be a premadonna, easyjet can be your friend. You don’t always need to travel in style

If you’re flying somewhere relatively close, you might want to consider ditching your long term love for your premium airline. Explore prices of the budget airlines. Whilst their leg room might be marginally less, if you’re saving the pennies whilst doing so, we’re sure you’d be willing to make the compromise. Plus, with so many flights everyday, you’ll find these budget airlines are now a very well-oiled machine.

Air BnB & Hostels
Accommodation can often be the element that turns a cheap trip into a small fortune. When travelling in a group, AirBnb is where it’s at. More often than not you’ll be able to find a prime location for half the price of top hotels. It’s an easy way to organise large groups of people and can make your trip more exciting.

Hostels are another great shout. If you’re travelling alone especially, Hostels can be a hub of excitement, entertainment and social possibilities. If you’re happy to share a bathroom and aren’t too precious about cleanliness, then Hostels are a perfect pit-stop. There are thousands of hostels all over the world, many in quirky or historic locations that are not to be missed. Not to mention the memories that you’ll come home with!

Supermarket Sweep!

If you’re anything like us, then the best part of the holiday is usually the food, duh. But, by sacrificing one meal a day for a prepared supermarket meal, you may find yourself seriously saving the pennies. On the first day of your trip, why not pop down to the local supermarket and grab a few essentials. When out exploring in the city, we often make myself up a sandwich so that we can spend the money we would have spent on lunch on holiday essentials such as ice cream and cake 😉

Ditch the taxi rides, opt for bikes!

One last tip before we bore you to death! RENT BIKES. This is probably our favourite things to do. [ Note that this tip only applies when there are no hills, designated bike lanes, and lots of long, flat, roads – we’re on holiday after all, no one has time for exercise ;)]

Instead of spending half of your holiday in the back of a cab dishing out on extortionate rates and taxi tips, why not rent a bike for the day or duration of the stay. You’ll cover vast areas of the city and see all of it whilst you’re at it. It’s also a fab way to get some fresh air and build up an appetite for that ever-important ice cream stop!
