Gemma Dawkins Interview

Hi lovely, thanks for joining us on the blog today.
I was really privileged to meet you last year. Your energy and positivity was really inspiring. What is it that you do?

Ahhh thanks Hannah, it was so lovely to meet you as well. It’s fantastic what social media can do in terms of bringing people together. Well.. I have quite a few things going on. Firstly I am the founder of Health Revolution a company with a mission to inspire, educate and empower people to take control of their health, fuelling both mind and body in order for them to achieve their potential and be the best version of themselves!

As a Holistic Health & Mindset Coach, I work with clients on a 1-to-1 and group basis as well as delivering bespoke workshops. I have also set up a running fitness group called Born To Run whereby I aim to bring people together to improve their overall health and fitness levels through running.

As well as this I am also currently a Researcher on the Research Autism Cygnet Mentoring Project which is investigating the effectiveness of a mentoring program designed by people on the autism spectrum on individuals wellbeing. I am also completing an MA in Autism and within my buisness Health Revolution I mentor individuals on the autism spectrum as I believe that best practice for people on the autism spectrum is best practice for all.

Away from work I am also a performance track athlete (a runner). I am currently trying to qualify to compete in the 2018 Commonwealth Games for Jersey.

Wow…you are one busy gal! Explain to us the benefits of having a health coach.

I don’t believe that all health coaches are the same. Depending on the coaches’ experiences they all seem to specialise in different areas. I have a background in psychology so I look at the relationships that people have with the different components of health, which centres around mindset in order to support and empower them to take control of achieving their health and wellness goals and ultimately achieve their potential.

Overall I think that Health Coaches give you the time you need to really understand the root cause of your health concerns. I personally encourage people to move beyond the quick fixes, taking a person-centred approach so that people can find a ‘healthy’ that suits them and their lifestyle.

What are the most common mistakes that you hear people falling foul to in the health industry?

I think it’s most probably too much emphasis on nutrition and fitness. I work within 4 pillars of health; nutrition, fitness, mindset and support and I actually believe that the 2 most important components to health are mindset and support. Nutrition and fitness are easy once you focus on the other two. Eating well doesn’t have to be complicated but because of our mindsets, and unfortunately our need for quick fixes, it causes us to overcomplicate it massively. There is no ‘one size fits all’ with anything. The best thing you can do is invest time in yourself in terms of developing your confidence to know how best to fuel your mind and body.

I know you’ve done a lot of work with autism, how did you get involved with this?

Well when I finished university I knew I didn’t want to go back to Jersey so I had to find a job pretty quickly to justify this to my parents.  So after having completed my psychology degree I knew that I would be happy working in a job that met my values of ‘making a difference and helping others’. So having looked around, I came across a position to support children on the autism spectrum within a mainstream school. Whilst I had no prior experience of working with children on the autism spectrum, the job met all my values. Having got the job I then fell in love with the field of autism and now I have explored many different areas and have gained a vast amount of experience both practical and on a research basis.

You’ve also pursued athletics professionally, what has been the greatest thing you’ve learnt from this experience?

Athletics has really shaped the person I am today in terms of my motivation, drive and dedication. But having gone through a love/hate relationship with athletics, on a psychological level the biggest thing it has taught me is that mindset is key to everything! If you want to achieve anything then you have to take control on a mental level to ensure that a lack of confidence and fear don’t hold you back!

• • • •

What’s your biggest regret?

I really don’t have, any regrets whatsoever. Any mistakes I have made or setbacks I have had in my life I have learnt from massively, so I actually don’t regret them at all.

• • • •

What makes you the most happy?

Well I am extremely happy when I’m around the people I love and great food. But what makes me most happy is when I help others and see them develop in confidence and want to achieve their potential.

• • • •

If you were to die tomorrow, and could have anything in the world, what would your last meal be?

Oh my this is very difficult because I have so many favourites so I would like a to have a buffet that contained sweet potatoes, halloumi, salmon, nut butter, Booja-Booja ice cream and hummus! I’m sure that would taste amazing all on one plate! Oh and a glass of champagne and a good bottle of vino would have to be in there too!

• • • •

Trainers or Heels?
Most definitely trainers!! I live in trainers! Whilst I like to dress up every now and again a new pair of trainers fills me with greater satisfaction than a new pair of heels!

• • • •

Sun or snow?
Most definitely sun! There’s nothing better than a good dose of Vitamin D.

• • • •

• • • •

Have you ever had a life changing moment?

Yes most definitely! I battled psychology and it forced me to put things into perspective. It taught me so much about myself and unlocked my passions, and as a result doors started to open up for me.

• • • •

Where do you see yourself next year?
I see myself having set up my business Health Revolution as a service that is changing the lives of so many people. I see Health Revolution doing this not only as a service helping others to achieve their potential in being the best version of themselves but also as a business that opens up opportunities for individuals to work in a field that they are passionate about. I see Health Revolution as a family that is passionate about helping others and making a difference.
