Best Free Summer Activities

At one time or other we’ve all found ourselves slumped on the sofa with nothing to do. Even the glimmering sunshine making little dent in our enthusiasm. More often than not, it’s our lack of ideas that keep us house bound, which is why today I’d like to share with you our top summer activities that won’t even cost you a penny! Thank us later!

1.Lakeside/Seaside Picnic

There’s something exciting about packing up your snacks, going for a walk and enjoying them in the fresh air. Even if it only lasts an hour or two, getting out of the house, potentially with friends or family is guaranteed to boost the mood. Don’t forget to pack a blanket though!

2. Go for a hike/Climb a mountain

No, you don’t have to live in LA for this one. Wherever you may be, there’s always the great outdoors right on your doorstep. Taking long walks, or climbing a mountain is a great stress reliever on a summers’ day. Pack yourself a few bottles of ice waters, grab a friend (or even your puppy) and enjoy yourself. We recommend turning off your technology and just enjoy the scenery.

3. Play Dixit.

Never heard of it? No, nor had we until a few months ago. But this game is great. It’s versatile, engaging and can be great fun too! Get yourself a few packs of different Dixit cards and you’ll be set for hours of fun. It’s also a great ice breaker when getting to know new people so if you’re planning any solo travels this year pack your cards and pluck up the courage to invite a group of other travellers to a game!

4. Go on a road trip

This one can be quite daunting, but when you really think about it, what’s there to lose. There must be somewhere local that you’ve been dying to visit but never had the chance to see, or somewhere your friends have been raving about for years. Top up on petrol, fill your car with good snacks and good CDs and set off. You’ll never forget good road-trip memories.

5. Visit Local Markets

Just because they’re selling goods doesn’t mean that you have to spend a penny. Strolling around markets is one of our favourite past times. Talking to store holders and engaging in conversations with like-minded people is all part of the fun. 9/10 times there’s usually free food samples too so it’s basically a win-win combination.

6. Go Camping

If you’re anything like us, you’ll have spent your childhood huddled in tents in the garden pretending that you were on an extravagent adventure. We’re not quite sure why these adventures ever stopped, but since rounding into adulthood we seem to have lost our wild side. Camping is coming back into fashion and in a huge way. You don’t have to be pitching your tent in Glastonbury to be set for a good time. With a group of good friends, or even a stack of good books there’s something quite surreal about spending the nights cuddled up under the stars. Give it a go – despite initial reluctance we’re sure you’ll love it!

7. Visit local gardens/national parks

The world is absolutely abundant with national parks, gardens and woodland. We live incredibly local to over 8 of the above but are yet to pay them a visit. How crazy is that. If you’re looking for an afternoon activity with the family, this is the one for you. You’re likely to bump into the locals there, too.

8. Go for a bike ride

You don’t have to be the next olympian to get on your bike. Take it slow, ride on flat ground and just enjoy the fresh air. If you’re living in the city, plan quiet routes and explore an area that you haven’t been to before. Bikes are a fantastic way to get around and save your legs at the same time 😉

8. Swim in a lake/the sea

Now I know we’re not all lucky enough to live by a lake/local reservoir or the ocean, but for those that are, EMBRACE it. There’s nothing quite like frolicing in the water on a summers’ day. And for those of you not so keen on getting your toes wet, why not grab a book and just enjoy being waterside.
